Music Videos into Stories: "Give Me Love" by Ed Sheeran
Music video stories? The fourth time's the charm!
I’ve walked through my Music Videos into Stories world with somewhat more ease than I thought I would—and it seemed only apt that I would dip back into my favorite music videos of the past for it at some point. I mean, not everything can be K-pop and Taylor Swift, right?
Ed Sheeran’s “Give Me Love” was a surefire pick because the music video has enchanted me for a long time.
Here’s the music video for your viewing pleasure:
For a glimpse of the lyrics, check them out below:
Give me love like never before
'Cause lately I've been craving more
And it's been a while but I still feel the same
Maybe I should let you go
You know I'll fight my corner
And that tonight I'll call ya
After my blood is drowning in alcohol
No I just wanna hold ya
The beauty of the music video for “Give Me Love” is how it really evokes a sense of mythology even with its urban setting. You’re literally watching a female Cupid come into her power right before your very eyes.
I could transcribe a short story idea from just the music video alone—but I think it would be a bit deeper if I run a bit askew from the music video’s narrative. Let’s see where it goes, shall we?
Let’s actually do a semi-sorta continuation.
You saw how Lady Cupid became a bit mad with power as she struck arrow after arrow at her targets. So overcome with the madness from her power, she even took an arrow and stabbed herself with it. Then she passed out—only for the arrow to disappear as she opened her eyes to find herself faced with a police officer with kind eyes.
This is where our story starts.
This girl, once gifted with the powers of Cupid, awakens with no memories of who she is or why she’s there. But she sees this young man in front of her—someone who looks oddly familiar—and some part of her is struck by him. It’s like love at first sight, only much more cosmic in nature. Threads of fate thread around her throat.
But, by all intents and purposes, this situation seems like an apparent suicide attempt. The girl is taken by an ambulance to the hospital where she is admitted to the ward for people with mental and behavioral issues. There, doctors see her and assess her memory loss problem too. But the deeper issue is why she ended up nearly dead on her apartment floor.
Little does she know she’s about to get entangled in a realm of gods and monsters as she meets people in the ward. There’s a man who’s dying of cancer who looks eerily like Santa Claus. Another girl sings to herself, plants perking to life at her fingertips. A boy with fingers stained with ink takes to a piano and plays melodies that make her feel like her heart is being squeezed inside her chest. Little does she realize she’s crossed paths with an elf lord, a fairy, and a lost god of sorrow.
Then there’s the police officer, who comes to visit her one day to see how she’s doing. Something’s not quite right with him either. His eyes are too green, almost otherworldly—and his smile doesn’t quite reach his eyes even though he’s a friendly fellow overall. Yet she still feels the pull of attraction towards him. Why? She tries to understand it and untangle it in her mind.
A woman also comes to the ward looking for her—and this woman claims to be her mother, Aphra Sentry. But the woman does not look familiar, no matter how beautiful she is.
Why did the girl lose her memories?
Why does she feel this desire to matchmake people she’s just met?
What role does she play in an ongoing feud among mythical beings of Old Magic?
What should she do to avoid the fate of a Thousand Years of Blood as has been foretold by an old prophecy?
There are only so many ways such a story can go when gods, monsters, creatures, and mortals get tangled together like this…
